Receiving an incorrect challan can be an unpleasant experience, especially if you are confident enough to follow all traffic rules. Issuing wrong traffic challan not only causes stress but also depletes financial resources. Whether it’s a technical error, mistaken identity or the collection of incorrect vehicle data, addressing such issues quickly is essential. In this blog, we will guide you through the basics of e-challan and the process of filing a complaint against the wrongly issued traffic challan.
Traffic violators are often seen on Indian roads. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the crucial need for strict enforcement of traffic laws. The introduction of e-challan systems, especially through digital platforms like ‘Parivahan’, has revolutionized the way traffic violations are managed. This digital platform identifies the traffic violator and punishes him with fines in a streamlined, systematic and transparent manner.
The e-challan system works through a series of different cameras installed at major intersections, traffic signals and other important waypoints. These cameras monitor traffic violations in real time.
When an offense, such as jumping a red light or speeding, is detected, the cameras record the vehicle’s license plate. The identified vehicle owner will then be issued a digital challan, known as e-challan, and sent to his registered number or email address.
Although the e-challan system was introduced as an efficient method of regulating traffic violations, it is not completely free from periodic errors. Since the challan system relies on automation or monitoring technology, there is always the chance of technical errors or human oversight. And there may be cases when you receive a challan wrongly or accidentally even if you have followed all the traffic rules. Such scenarios are known as ‘wrong e-challan’.
Such cases can occur when a camera misinterprets a vehicle’s license plate due to unclear images. However, if you are confident enough that you are following all the rules, you can file a complaint against the wrong traffic challenge issued against you.
In the coming parts, we will guide you through the steps to file a complaint against the wrong e-challan.
Remark: To challenge a wrong challan, you need solid evidence to prove your adherence to the rules of the road and to establish that the challan is indeed a mistake.
Filing an online complaint for a wrongly issued challan is a simple procedure and can be done in a few simple steps:
Visit the official eChallan.parivahan.gov.in website.
Click on the ‘Complaint’ tab to go to the Complaints System page. There you will find the above section as shown in the image.
Provide necessary information such as your name, phone number, traffic challan number and other requested details.
Select the specific issue you are facing with the e-Challan from the drop-down list (e.g. wrong vehicle number or wrong violation). It is better to explain your complaint in the appropriate box.
Once everything has been completed, click ‘Submit’ to send your complaint.
The officers will review the data submitted through their complaints systems and provide an update on the status of your concern.
You can file a complaint regarding the wrongly issued traffic challan by sending an email or calling the helpline number:

Tracking a complaint is just as crucial as filing it. Fortunately, the e-challan system provides a seamless way to track the status of your complaints. Since this system is universal, both traffic police and vehicle owners can manage and monitor challans from any part of the country. Here are the steps to check the status of your complaint:
Visit https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/gsticket/.
Click on the ‘Ticket Status’ tab, next to the ‘Send’ tab, as shown in the image above.
Enter your e-ticket number or e-Challan complaint number along with the Captcha code displayed on the screen.
Click on ‘Check Status’ to view the latest progress of your complaint.
It will be easy for the traffic police department to investigate your e-challan complaint if you briefly provide a detailed explanation as to why you accept that the e-challan is incorrect.
Attach any document that gives rise to your complaint and your case will be strong and well-founded to support its defense.
You should make photocopies of the e-Challan complaint form and related documents for future reference.
When you receive an eChallan, you should keep the following legal considerations in mind:
An eChallan or any other traffic challan must be paid within 60 days of issuance. Please note that any complaint against the wrong traffic challan can also be filed within that 60-day period.
If you feel that you have received an incorrect e-challan, you cannot decline the payment. The appropriate response to this situation would be to file a complaint first. Please note: failure to pay fines may result in a citation or license suspension.
One must take the help of a lawyer for challans regarding crimes such as; operating under the influence of alcohol, driving without a driver’s license, etc.
What happens if we don’t pay the challan in India?
